Have you ever felt like journaling is just too daunting of a task? Have you experienced sitting down with a blank page, pen in hand, and not a single word coming to mind? You’re not alone. These feelings are widespread, and I’ve experienced them over the years. While praised for its therapeutic benefits, journaling can be intimidating, especially for those who struggle to express their thoughts and feelings through writing. Even though I can write an article, sometimes I have challenges with traditional journaling practices. But what if I told you there’s a workaround to this classic problem? Enter the world of AI-prompted journaling - a game changer for folks (like me) who’d rather speak their mind than write it down.
Instead of staring down a blank notebook, you interact with an AI on your device. With voice-to-text technology, you can have your spoken words transcribed, creating a written record of your thoughts and feelings without picking up a pen. Then, the AI prompts questions or suggests themes to explore in your journal. Don’t let the ‘AI’ part scare you off. Think of it as a brainstorming buddy rather than a robotic overlord. Remember, it’s your thoughts, your ideas, and your voice that will fill the pages. The AI is just there to give you a little nudge.
It’s perfect when you’re having one of those days where you know you’ve got a lot to process but can’t find the right starting point. This method naturally fits those who feel more at home speaking than writing. You get to talk as if you’re having a conversation, allowing your ideas to flow freely without the pressure of crafting the ‘perfect’ sentence.
Imagine having a friend with you 24/7, ready to listen without judgment and offer space to express your thoughts and feelings freely. Providing thoughtful prompts and questions can gently nudge you towards introspection and self-discovery. The prompts help guide your thoughts, making the journaling process less daunting. It encourages you to explore different facets of your life you might not have considered writing about otherwise. From daily gratitudes to tackling complex emotions, these prompts can lead to insightful reflections, offering new perspectives on familiar issues.
My Experience with the Rosebud Journal App
As part of my quest to discover better tools and methods to assist me in greater self-awareness and ability to relieve stress, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm, I recently began using the Rosebud journal app. So far, my experience has been excellent, and I’ve found myself going deeper into my reflections and personal insights because of the AI-powered technology. Suffice it to say, I’ve been pleasantly surprised since my first journaling session with the app.
Their website lists Rosebud as “The journal that talks back.” At first, I was skeptical, but I decided to try it out anyway. I’m so glad I did. In the short time I’ve been using the app, I’ve gained some insights and been able to go deeper in my journaling practice.
Do you want to try out the Rosebud app? They offer a 7-day free trial, and if you sign up for Rosebud Bloom using this discount code: couragetoloveyourself, you’ll receive 15% off your subscription. I have this subscription and love it.
Here are some screenshots from my first journaling session.
On the day I started using the app, I felt many contrasts. I experienced many positive experiences and some challenges as well. It was also a day when I felt ready to return to yoga after taking a month off due to a lingering upper respiratory infection. I would experience coughing fits every time I tried doing anything remotely physical. Despite taking care of myself with all the right treatments and self-care, I had a persistent cough, lots of phlegm, and minor difficulty breathing. Yoga was out of the question for most of that month. Now, finally feeling about 99% back to myself, I was ready to return to my yoga practice.
Here is part of my exchange with the app regarding the topic of returning to my yoga practice:

My first experience with AI journaling took a couple of hours to complete. I didn’t spend all that time with the AI journal in one sitting but returned to it periodically throughout the evening. One of the most significant insights from my first AI-powered journaling session was that I don’t reward myself enough with activities that bring me joy without contributing to my tendency to escape or disassociate—a tendency I learned as a child and have struggled with most of my life. Yet, the back-and-forth “conversation” I had with myself and the AI reflective listening and deepening prompts helped me make some important realizations about that and how to navigate this for myself.
Overall, the Rosebud app has helped me create daily goals, given me practical insights to consider, and provided a space to go deeper and reflect on my day.
Here are some of the app’s functionalities that have helped me:
No “Blank Page Syndrome.” Uninspired? No problem. Our prompts are here to spark your thoughts, especially when you feel overwhelmed.
Dig Deeper. Rosebud will encourage you to go beneath the surface and dig deeper into your experiences.
Pattern Recognition. Using AI, Rosebud will point out recurring themes and patterns, helping you recognize what’s helping or hurting your well-being.
Self-Reflection. At the end of each entry, you’ll get a summary so that you can self-reflect.
Goal Setting. Rosebud can help you identify game-changing habits and goals that could realistically fit into your lifestyle.
Unique Benefits of AI Journaling
What makes AI journals stand out is their ability to adapt. Based on your entries, they can offer personalized prompts to guide your thinking and reflection process. This tailored interaction helps keep the journaling process fresh, engaging, and deeply relevant to your journey. It’s like having a counseling session where the counselor truly understands you and can provide bespoke advice at your convenience. Daily writing becomes a form of therapy, allowing you to unpack the day’s events, sift through your fears, and pinpoint the source of your anxieties.
Moreover, these journals are accessible, meaning you can capture your thoughts and feelings anytime, anywhere. Whether on a lunch break, commuting, or lying in bed unable to sleep, your AI journal is just a few clicks away on your smartphone or laptop. This ease of access encourages regular use, critical in building a healthy habit and making journaling an integral part of your anxiety management toolkit.
Privacy is another significant advantage. For many, the fear of someone stumbling upon their journal can deter them from fully opening up on paper. With AI journals, your entries are protected by passwords and encryption, ensuring your thoughts remain your own. This level of security fosters an environment where you can be completely honest with yourself, which is crucial for effective mental health self-care.
Finally, integrating AI with journaling introduces an element of consistency and reliability that can be hard to find elsewhere. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to put off self-care. However, with reminders, motivational quotes, and progress tracking, online AI journals keep you committed to your mental well-being journey. They serve as a gentle nudge, reminding you that caring for your mind is just as important as caring for your body.
Best Practices for AI Journaling
What sets AI-prompted journals apart is their ability to tailor questions based on your responses. To leverage this, be as honest and thorough as you can. If you’re anxious about an upcoming project, describe what worries you. The AI can then guide you through exploring these feelings further, suggesting you break down the project into more manageable tasks or remind you of past successes to boost your confidence.
AI prompts can bring greater depth and variety to your journaling practice. One day, you might explore your deepest fears; the next, you could plan the ultimate vacation. The key here is to keep an open mind and allow yourself to be surprised. It’s like conversing with the most interesting person you know—yourself.
Don’t think you have to stick to the script. If a prompt doesn’t resonate with you, tweak it, skip it, or use it as a jumping-off point to write about something entirely different. The goal is to make journaling a fulfilling and enjoyable part of your day, not another chore on your to-do list. Think of the prompts as suggestions rather than assignments set in stone. Your journal, your rules.
Speaking of making it your own, why not get creative with responding to these prompts? Try drawing, making lists, writing poems, or even composing a song. The format doesn’t matter as long as it helps you express yourself and explore your thoughts in a way that feels right. Mixing things up can keep your journaling practice fresh and exciting, plus it’s a fantastic way to discover new facets of your creativity.
Another practice to enhance the effectiveness of your AI-journaling experience is to tap into mindfulness. Before typing or speaking, take a few deep breaths and center yourself. Mindfulness practices help make the journaling session a meditative experience, allowing for deeper introspection and connection with your thoughts. Over time, you’ll notice patterns in your stressors and anxieties, which can be profoundly illuminating. Identifying triggers and understanding the root of your anxiety is a giant step towards managing it.
The journey towards managing stress and anxiety is personal and ever-evolving. AI-prompted journals are a tool, and like any tool, their effectiveness largely depends on how we use them. Incorporate them into your daily routine, respond honestly, and engage in mindfulness, and you’ll find them a powerful ally in your quest for peace and clarity.
Ultimately, the journey of using AI-prompted journals is as individual as you are. There’s no right or wrong way to explore your mind with the help of AI. It’s all about finding balance, pushing boundaries at your own pace, and, most importantly, having fun. Who knows? You might uncover insights about yourself that you never knew existed. So grab that journal (digital or otherwise), and let’s start this adventure together.

About David Rich Sol:
As a child, I wished to exchange my brain for someone else’s. Growing up, I felt misunderstood and lonely. If only I could have received my confirmation of neurodivergence when I was a child, I could have avoided some trauma and emotional pain.
Now, as a late-discovered (and diagnosed) Autistic ADHDer, everything is finally making more sense, and I’m rediscovering and loving myself. I spent many years figuring out “what’s wrong with me,” only to discover nothing was “wrong with me.” I’m just not neurotypical (that is, I’m neurodivergent). Not better, not worse—just different.
My intent with Courage To Love Yourself is to rewrite and share my story and insights and help others better understand and accept themselves. I hope you learn to love and accept yourself to live a healthy, happy, and joy-filled life.
